How to save big money when staying in the big city

This summer has seen the number of visitors to London reach unprecedented levels, as people from all over the UK and from across the world have descended on the city to enjoy the twin spectacles of the Jubilee and the Olympics. In turn, these record numbers of visitors have meant record levels of business for the city’s hoteliers, who very kindly responded to the increased demand for their rooms by raising prices to record levels.

For holidaymakers a visit to the city has never been more expensive, but those who are thinking about visiting the city should be cheered by the news that there is a great way of avoiding the extortionate rates for hotel rooms whilst also steering well clear of the horrors of hostels or bed and breakfasts. That’s because there are now a large number of apartments in London available for holiday visitors to rent at locations all over the city. These apartments offer numerous advantages over traditional hotel rooms, the most obvious one being the massive savings it’s possible for groups of holidaymakers and families to make during the course of a stay in the city. Almost all hotels in London enforce a strict ‘two person per room’ policy, meaning that large groups of friends or families find themselves having to hire multiple rooms. The average price of a hotel room in London is over two hundred pounds for a single night, so it’s fair to say that renting out several rooms is not a cheap exercise.

By contrast, the nightly rate for a two bedroom apartment is the roughly the same as that of a single hotel room, so the price person per head is effectively half of that of a stay in a hotel. These economies of scale increase with the size of the apartment, so a family of four can expect to save several hundred pounds over the course of a week’s stay. Even better, the longer an apartment is booked for, the cheaper the nightly rate becomes, making the value of a rental even better.

But it’s not just financially that apartments come out on top. The average holiday apartment has between three and five times as much floor space as a similarly priced hotel room, making the experience of staying there far more pleasurable. Rental apartments offer their residents a real sense of freedom too – renters can come and go as they please, eat when they want and even entertain guests should they so desire, all without being surrounded by members of the public and hotel staff.

When one considers the two methods of accommodation in a straight comparison, the advantages rental apartments offer over hotels makes a visitor’s accommodation decision a no-brainer. However, a word of caution before everyone goes rushing too book their apartment –  when renting   use, it’s best to avoid booking through private landlords. There are a host of dodgy dealers placing adverts for apartments in classified sections who are only too eager to double and triple book properties and then run off with the cash (in many cases these fraudsters may not even own the property they’re advertising). Booking a rental apartment through an established company such as Your Space apartments.com) drastically reduces the chances of any problems arising, and also means renters get far more reasonable rates as well as a good deal of peace of mind.
